Mindfulness and Selfhood
at Minster Abbey, Thanet 2021
Dates to be announced
Facilitator & organiser: Karin van Maanen
Co-facilitator: Lee Stagles
The focus of this retreat is the idea of selfhood. "Who am I?" and "What is the self?" are questions the yogis of the East have asked themselves for thousands of years. They tried to find the answer through philosophy, meditation and Buddhist psychology, the Abhidharma, which mapped consciousness in order to figure out how we construct our reality in our mind, including our idea of ourselves. More recently, neuropsychologists are combining mindfulness with what we now know about our nervous system to shed light on the same questions. We will touch on some of these perspectives and we will explore the question of selfhood experientially and creatively.
The retreat programme includes periods of silence (including some meal times), guided and silent meditation, walking meditation, mindful movement and exploration of stories. The art of storytelling can help us understand our human condition and the contexts our ideas of selfhood are formed in. How we are in the world is deeply and often unconsciously influenced by the stories we hear and the stories we create in our own minds.
The retreat is facilitated by Karin and Lee, supported by the community of nuns resident at Minster Abbey. The Abbey is a working Benedictine convent with early medieaval roots and more than 1,000 years of contemplative history.
Karin and Lee are both trained Embodied Facilitators and regularly work together as storytellers. Karin is also an experienced retreat leader, yoga and meditation teacher and teaches mindful movement. She has more than 10 years of Buddhist meditation experience and holds an MSc in Mindfulness Studies. Lee is a men's work leader and coach and both Karin and Lee use storytelling as a tool in their work to help people transform their lives for the better.
The retreat starts at 6pm on Thursday evening (arrivals from 4pm) and finishes at 3pm on Sunday afternoon.
